Who is Choupette?

CHOUPETTE

In honor of National Cat Day I wanted to share with you a famous cat named Choupette.
Choupette is the beautiful cat owned by Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld. As if being loved and spoiled by Karl wasn't enough, Choupette will soon represent a newly released line of accessories inspired by her. WOW... or should I say MEOW!! That is one lucky kitty!

The Choupette collection is filled with feline-inspired goods like a cat-shaped knit hat ($61.50), shopping tote ($465) and assorted phone accessories. Representing Karl Lagerfelds' own style, the line features a pair of fingerless-gloves.

eBay Stress

It seems that all of us have bid on eBay at one time or another. Usually it is very exciting... Who doesn't love waiting in anticipation for an item to end to see if you've won. Today I am doing just that. Unfortunately, it is not really exciting but rather stressful. Last night at about 2 in the morning while I was unable to sleep I decided to poke around on eBay to see what I could find. The first thing I looked for was actually a pair of boots that I have wanted since last year...You heard me right... last year! What an amazing find and in my size too. So I decided I have to have these boots. I bid $40 over the starting price. Things were looking good until this afternoon when I was outbid by someone. Imagine the nerve of them. Do they not know how long I have waited to have these boots?! Seriously a***a... what is wrong with you? How could you outbid me!?! Now I am forced to watch this auction to the end and bid the highest price that I am willing to pay.  Can you say~ STRESS!!  ***For everyone that wanted to know... I WON the auction!! (new boots will be here on Tuesday or Wednesday :-)

Who doesn't LOVE a Bargain?

To my fellow fashionistas(especially the ones that love a bargain):

Recently while surfing the internet I came across a store that I have never heard of.  Imagine that!?! I also couldn't believe that Cassidy, who lives and shops in Boston all the time, had never mentioned this place to me! The store is called The Closet. It is a high-end consignment shop located in the heart of Boston, where all the great fashion is found... on Newbury Street. Shopping at The Closet is on my to-do-list next time I visit Boston.

For more information be sure to check out their blog...

Everybody Loves Eva

I loved this article written by Tyler McCall for Fashionista.com.  I am a huge Eva Chen fan and was so excited when she became the new editor-in-chief of Lucky magazine. Eva has so much knowledge and is never shy about sharing it with her followers. I hope you enjoy this informative article as much as I did...
We’re not shy about our affection for new Lucky editor-in-chief Eva Chen, who’s so in-tune with the way we consume fashion in the digital age. So on the eve of her first Lucky FABB(the FABB stands for Fashion and Beauty Blog, FYI) conference–next week, October 24 and 25!–we had to catch up with the EIC to hear what she’s cooked up for her debut effort.
Of course, this isn’t Chen’s first conference. “I was lucky enough to attend the Los Angeles Lucky FABB session in April, and I loved it,” she tells us. “I thought the energy was so fantastic; it’s a great group of girls and guys, and everyone was so excited and happy to be there.”
Chen is putting her own Lucky FABB experience to good use. “It was a great thing to be a part of, so when I started thinking about this Lucky FABB–especially because it’s in New York–we really wanted to put something together that was special,” she tells us. “It feels really great to pull together this fantastic group of speakers.”
“It’s a great mashup of a lot of different things, and I loved curating this group,” she continues happily. “It was just people who I was friends with and that I want to hang out with anyway, and then I get to put them all in a room together and have 300-plus Luckyfans be able to listen to their stories.”
So with that in mind, Chen is bringing together some serious heavy hitters: Celeb pals (and recent Lucky cover girls!) Kate Bosworth and Eva Mendes will be chatting about their style on and off the red carpet: “To have both of them there talking about their personal style is a real powerhouse, exciting thing for us,” Chen says.
And of course, this being Lucky FABB, bloggers like Into the Gloss’s Emily Weiss and Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine will talk about building their blogs and finding success online. But Chen sounds most proud of a new part of Lucky FABB that they’re calling the Founders Series. “I want people to feel that this whole wide universe of opportunity is out there for them,” Chen says of the new addition.
“I wanted people to hear these stories from people who are not that much older than the average Lucky FABB attendee. From founders who have these incredible stories and how they got to where they are, mistakes they made, and what they wish they’d known.”
We just had one last question–any last-minute nerves? “In terms of sitting up in front of a room full of 300-plus people who are furiously Tweeting and Instagramming away, yes,” Chen admits. “I’m more nervous about social media fails. But otherwise I’m not too nervous!”  Article credit: Tyler McCall for Fashionista.com

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Understanding Breast Cancer Risk and How to Lower It

Every woman wants to know what she can do to lower her risk of breast cancer.
Today, there are many risk factors that have contributed to more women being diagnosed with breast cancer. Most breast cancers AREN'T inherited -- only about 5% to 10% are. This means there are many things you can do to lower your risk of being diagnosed.
If you have no history of the disease, there are steps you can take to keep your risk as low as it can be. If you've been diagnosed, there are things you can do beyond any treatments you're receiving to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back or developing a new cancer. And if you are living with advanced-stage breast cancer, you want to do everything you can to slow the cancer's growth.
Researchers are working to learn how factors in the environments outside and inside your body may work separately and together to affect your health and your risk of developing breast cancer. The environment inside your body includes genetics (the genes you got from your mother and father), hormone levels, and illnesses. The environment outside your body includes air, water, food, and everything else you come into contact with each day. Parts of this external environment enter your internal environment every day -- the food you eat, the water you drink, the air you breathe, and the vitamins or medicines you take are just a few.
Some of these factors -- your sex, your age, and your genetics, for example -- can't be changed. But many other factors -- smoking cigarettes, exercising, and eating nutritious food -- can be changed or modified. By making the healthiest choices possible, you can make sure your breast cancer risk is as low as possible.
These recommendations are based on current knowledge and research. Some of them may seem hard -- losing weight or quitting smoking, for example -- but making these changes can help lower your risk of breast cancer. Remember, no one is perfect. Set your goals and try to do the best you can every day.
Breastcancer.org Founder and President Marisa Weiss, M.D. says, "Some steps yield instant payoff -- like stopping hormone replacement therapy or catching up on lost sleep. Other steps require a lot of work over time before payday -- like maintaining a healthy weight. Our aim is to give you steps that are very practical and reasonable. Set your goals and strive to do the best you can on an everyday basis!"
In this section, you can learn more about what risk means and how that risk can change:
The medical experts for Lower Your Risk are:
  • Marisa Weiss, M.D., director of breast radiation oncology and director of breast health outreach, Lankenau Hospital, Jefferson Health System, Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Weiss is president and founder of Breastcancer.org.
  • Joan Ruderman, Ph.D., Nelson Professor of cell biology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA and member of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Carmi Orenstein, M.P.H., Translational Researcher
Dr. Weiss and Dr. Ruderman are members of the Breastcancer.org Professional Advisory Board, including more than 70 medical experts in breast cancer-related fields.

THE BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL

Could it be that one of the best kept beauty secrets is hiding in your kitchen cabinet? For the last few months I have been hearing more and more about the benefits of Coconut Oil. I decided to do some research and I couldn't believe all the uses for this amazing, all-natural product.

1. A body and hand moisturizer. A recent animal study found that when applied topically, virgin coconut oil can speed up wound healing, and a human study found it to be effective in increasing hydration and reducing water loss in seriously dry skin. Sounds like a recipe for a really good lotion to us! It's a health-expert favorite, too. Says Wyk: "It smells delicious, is very affordable, and leaves my skin feeling nourished and smooth."
2. A cheekbone highlighter. Nothing perks up a tired face like a little highlighter, but you don't need store-bought products to achieve the same effect. Simply sweep a small amount of coconut oil on top of makeup and leave it alone. It looks like your skin but glowier, which is why many natural makeup brands use it as a base ingredient in their formulas. If you're looking for a more portable option, try the cult favorite Living Luminizer by RMS Beauty, which has a coconut-oil base and light reflecting pigment.
3. To shave your legs. Conventional shaving cream is an expensive cocktail of chemicals that you don't need to get a nice clean shave on your legs or underarms. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is inexpensive, naturally antimicrobial, and smells great. Also, its skin-soothing properties will leave your legs looking hydrated (but never greasy).
4. As a deep-conditioner. There's a reason many conditioners contain coconut oil: It's better able to penetrate hair (and prevent protein loss) than mineral and sunflower oil, according to research. "I use it in my hair and on my skin for deep conditioning," says Tasneen Bhatia, MD, an integrative doctor and owner of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine. Apply a quarter-size dollop to your hair, comb it, and then pile it into a loose bun. You'll want to place a soft towel over your pillow or sleep in a shower cap. In the morning, shampoo as usual with a gentle cleanser.
5. To remove eye makeup.
6. To clean your face.  Because coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal, moisturizing and, according to research, great for atopic dermatitis, many women swear by its use as a nighttime moisturizer for their face, too. Try the double-cleansing method: Simply rub the oil in circular motions all over your face and neck, giving yourself a gentle massage as you go. When you're done, wash off the residue with your favorite cleanser. (If you're adult-acne prone, avoid this technique unless you know your skin tolerates coconut oil.)
7. In a luscious body scrub. Here's a little DIY beauty secret: That store-bought body scrub you save for special occasions? It's a waste of money. That's because you can make one yourself with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. Dr. Low Dog agrees. "I love to do this. It's wonderfully moisturizing, great for the skin, inexpensive, and blissfully absent of chemicals you can't pronounce!" To make your own, Dr. Low Dog suggests melting 1/2 c of coconut oil at very low heat. Pour it over 1 c of brown sugar or salt and stir well. If you have some on hand, add in five drops of your favorite essential oil or some pure vanilla extract for a scrub so fragrant you'll want to eat it.
8. For a little rubdown. Many store-bought massage oils have either coconut or jojoba oil as their base. Cut out the middleman and go straight to the bottle. It's slippery, skin-friendly, and moisturizing, too.

I think the beauty benefits are great but decided to include the chart below so everyone could see the great health benefits too. Next time I am at the grocery store I will be sure to pick up a bottle! ~J

Thanks to Prevention Magazine for the great tips!

Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years. Studies done on native diets high in coconut oil consumption show that these populations are generally in good health, and don’t suffer as much from many of the modern diseases of western nations where coconut oil is seldom consumed anymore.

Feeling hot, hot, hot!!

Ok... So it's October first and it was 78 degrees out! Who doesn't love that. I loved being able to wear shorts today. My dilemma came when I realized that I had my hot and spicy chili planned for dinner tonight. Who cooks chili and corn muffins on what feels like a summer day? Well me! I decided to go with my planned meal because it was easier just to make it. As always, my chili was great... Thanks to a modified Mario Batali recipe! I also came to the realization that it doesn't matter what the thermometer reads because chili tastes great no matter how hot it is outside! ~ J

ingredients:
  • 8 slices cooked bacon (cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • 3 onions (finely chopped)
  • 3 bell peppers (stemmed/seeded/finely chopped)
  • 3 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 7 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • 3 pounds ground beef
  • 6 ounce can of tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 8 ounce canned and diced green chiles (drained)
  • 1 small can adobe chipotles diced with juice
  • 4 ounce canned and diced jalapeño chiles (I use 1/2 can)
  • 4-5 cups water
  • 28 ounce can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 12 ounce can Goya small white beans
  • 12 ounce can Goya small pink beans
  • 2  teaspoon cilantro (optional)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese to top bowls of chili
  • ** I serve chili with corn bread (as pictured above)

instructions:
1.Cook bacon and cut into 1 inch pieces.
2.Brown ground beef and drain the fat off. Set to the side in a separate bowl.
3.Add your olive oil to a skillet and brown your chopped garlic.  Once that is browned, add your chopped onion and peppers. Cook onions and peppers until they soften.
4. Add ground beef to vegetable mixture.
5. Add the diced chiles, jalapenos, chipotles, tomato paste, and petite diced tomatoes.
6. Add the cumin, chili powder, and cinnamon.
7. Rinse and drain white and pink beans and add to chili.
8. Add water, cook and simmer for an hour or longer.
9. Garnish chili with fresh cilantro and shredded cheddar cheese to taste.
10. Serve with corn bread... delicious!
